Too Many Choices...Which Gatorade is good for me?
I thought I was being an astute shopper when I purchased a couple of cans of powdered Gatorade the other day, 2 cans for $ 5.00. I had been researching the pro's and cons of various endurance drinks for cycling and noticed that Gatorade rated very high on several "lists". The previous week I had purchased a can of Power Bar's Endurance Refuel for $15.00. I thought maybe I had discovered a bargain with the Gatorade.
A potentially bad omen was a vendor who was restocking some nearby shelves. As he passed by me he murmured "ah, all sugar". To this day I have no clue what he meant, but I only bought one can of the powder. The next day (no vendor on the aisle) I bought another. When I returned home I realized that I had two different types of Gatorade: one plain vanilla can and one called Gatorade Fierce. When I went back to the review on "Bicycle.com" I discovered that the Gatorade that they compared to the Power Bar product was Gatorade Endurance. Now I am sure many of you have seen the TV commercial regaling the roots of Gatorade back to the noble scientists (not necessarily Nobel) coming to the aide of the student athletes who play football in "The Swamp". Which Gatorade helped them become National Champions?
Rather than spend a lot of time Googling I think I will apply my general shopping philosophy to cycling nutrition: shop for sales. I'm sure someday we'll find out that many of the products are no more beneficial or nutritious than bottle water is healthy. Entrepreneurs with access to bathtubs and spigots! When my average mph on the flats is 20, and I am surging to the tops of hills with average grades of 8 or higher I'll review the subject again.
My new Forerunner 305 had some problems recently. It died, it wouldn't turn on. I did some research and found out about software reboot issues, and did the simultaneous pressing of the on/off and mode buttons. No luck. Left it charging on an outlet (not computer USB) still no luck. Emailed Garmin requesting a return authorization. I am still waiting for a response after about 24 hours. I'm a little disappointed with Garmin, especially after a recent very prompt. very professional experience with Canon. I was having problems with an out of warranty lens, and Canon's email response and service was exception. I will continue to wait to see how long, if ever, it takes Garmin to respond to my email. This afternoon the Forerunner dramatically came back to life. I'll put it through its paces tomorrow.
Todays pictures are from recent trips to Cholula, Mexico. As I try to improve my daily diet I have been experimenting with many of my dried peppers from Mexico. I soak them for about 30 minutes then puree them in a blender. I add them to soups and sauces. For my pasta sauce I add a lot of fresh mint and basil to temper the "heat" of the peppers. Great flavor and texture!
Waldo County, situated in mid-coast Maine along scenic Penobscot Bay, has genuine New England character evidenced by working port towns and quaint rural villages. Visitors are awed by the area's unspoiled beauty. From striking coastal views to sweeping mountain vistas, dramatic natural settings abound. In addition great care has been taken to preserve and refurbish numerous historic landmarks, homes and buildings. Consequently, the Maine of yesteryear is still found here.
