Mary, how does your garden grow?
Gardening has always been a matter of personal taste, and often the outstanding works of previous generations are torn down to make way for the style of the next. All are different, and all, like their owners and creators, have a distinct personality.

Liberty Bailey, a horticulturist who lived in the early 1800's once said: One plant in a tin can may be a more helpful and inspiring garden to some than a whole acre of lawn and flowers.

Backyard gardening is a healing activity for children and adults and it helps them reconnect with nature.

In between the rain showers I grabbed my camera to take a few pictures from the community gardens. My garden is not overly pretty, organized, artistic or weed free. But Mary, the lettuce practically begs to be added to a sandwich, salad or just nibbled like a rabbit. The flowers are just starting to bud and show promise of a colorful summer. I am happy with the results so far.
There was some initial resistance to the community garden by some condo owners. So far the reaction seems positive. There is now a waiting list for plots and the area has become a center of activity for adults and children. There is a positive element of competition with styles ranging from wild but productive (mine), to English Tudor and 4'Th of July Americana. Studies show that nature and gardening are the best stress relievers. Recent studies by the American Dietetic Association found that children who garden eat more fruits and vegetables.

The creature, called Swamp Thing, was originally conceived as Alec Holland mutating into a vegetable-like creature, a "muck-encrusted mockery of a man". However, under writer Alan Moore, Swamp Thing was reinvented as an elemental entity created upon the death of Alec Holland, with Holland's memory and personality intact. He is described as "a plant that thought it was Alec Holland, a plant that was trying its level best to be Alec Holland."
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing had a profound effect on mainstream comic books, being the first horror comic to approach the genre from a literary point of view since the EC horror comics of the 1950's, and broadened the scope of the series to include ecological and spiritual concerns while retaining its horror-fantasy roots.
Waldo County, situated in mid-coast Maine along scenic Penobscot Bay, has genuine New England character evidenced by working port towns and quaint rural villages. Visitors are awed by the area's unspoiled beauty. From striking coastal views to sweeping mountain vistas, dramatic natural settings abound. In addition great care has been taken to preserve and refurbish numerous historic landmarks, homes and buildings. Consequently, the Maine of yesteryear is still found here.
